BERLIOZ, Hector (1803-1869). Autograph album leaf signed and dedicated with a musical quotation of the theme of the first movement of Harold en Italie , inscribed Thème de la symphonie d'Harold en Italie, Hector Berlioz, Cologne, 26 Février 1866, Pour l'album de M m e Marchesi. , 1 page, 8 bars, marked Adagio , one stave for solo viola, black ink on brown paper, 257 x 209mm. On 22 December 1833 Paganini attended a concert given by Berlioz and subsequently asked him to write a work for the viola, inspired by Paganini's Stradivari viola. The result was Harold en Italie , a musical interpretation of Byron's poem Childe Harold , which also took inspiration from Berlioz's journeys in Italy. The work was first performed on 23 November 1834 in Paris. Sadly Paganini never played the piece but at the end of a Paris performance in 1838 he walked on to the platform and knelt in front of the composer. Mathilde Marchesi came to know Berlioz while she was teaching at the Cologne Conservatoire between 1864 and 1868.
