One page of letterpress text with ornamental initial, engraved frontispiece, Engraved title with vignette within ornamental border, engraved calligraphic dedication by Biblena and portrait frontispiece of the dedicatee by Andreas and Josef Schmuzer after Martin de Meytens, 50 engraved plates, numbered 1-10 in each part, by A. and J. Schmuzer, J.A. Pfeffel, L. Zucchi and S. Kleiner after Bibiena. (Light marginal spotting to 5 plates, one marginal tear neatly repaired, light stain at extreme upper margin in about 6 plates.) Modern half green morocco, red leather lettering-piece on spine, gilt edges. Provenance : Luigi Rossini (1790-1857, inscription on verso of frontispiece and foot of title). FIRST EDITION with an interesting provenance. A large, set with fresh, dark impressions. The plates 'show brilliant baroque compositions' (Fowler) of catafalques, theatrical sets, a Passion series in architectural settings and decorations for the Riding School at Vienna for the marriage of Archduchess Mariana to Prince Charles of Lorraine. Copies are known (New York, Berlin) which have an additional plate 1 part VI. Rossini, architect, artist and engraver, was a pupil of Canova and whilst admitting Piranesi as a major influence would undoubtedly have appreciated the present work. His own large scale views of Rome (mostly produced between 1817 and 1824) would have given him an insight into the difficulties so ably overcome here by Bibiena. Cicognara 431; Fowler 136; Berlin Kat. 4152.
