BIBLE, Hebrew and Spanish . Paraphrasis caldaica en los cantares de Selomoh con el Texto Hebrayco y Ladino, traduzido en lengua Españolla [Vocalized Hebrew Song of Songs, with a Ladino version; the Targum on Song of Songs; also incorporating the Hebrew text of the Sayings of the Fathers with its Spanish translation, commonly ascribed to Moses Belmonte]. Amsterdam: David de Crasto Tartaz, 1664. 78 leaves. Printed from left to right. Hebrew text 28 leaves. 8vo, 151 x 90 mm. (6 x 3 5/8 in.), 18th century black morocco, richly gilt, roll-tooled floral borders or covers surrounding central gilt ornament, spine gilt, g.e., corners worn; some pale staining (mostly marginal) and soiling. . FIRST EDITION. Steinschneider 540; Kayserling 27, 30; Fuks, Hebrew Typography 437; not in Zedner, Darlow & Moule, or Roest. It is uncertain whether Moses Belmonte did in fact produce the Spanish translation of Avot. It seems more likely that he only edited earlier translations, which had appeared, for example, in Ladino in Venice and in Spanish in Ferrara. See: A. Kuyt & E.G.L. Schrijver. "Translating the Mishnah in the Northern Netherlands. A Tentative Bibliographie Raisonnée ," in: A. Kuyt & N.A. van Uchelen, eds., History and Form: Dutch Studies in the Mishnah ...(Amsterdam 1988) p. 1-41, esp. p. 36-38: Appendix 2: "An anonymous (?) Spanish translation of MAvot (ed. pr. Amsterdam 1644), commonly ascribed to Moses Belmonte."
