Beschreibung:

BIBLE, in French -- La Bible en Francoys . Lyons: Jean Pidier and Nicolas Bacquenois for Guillaume Rouillé, 1547. 2° (347 x 220mm). Woodcut title vignette of St. Jerome, large Creation woodcut, and 129 small woodcuts, woodcut historiated and criblé initials. (Very lightly browned, one short tear without loss.) Contemporary Parisian tan calf bound for Marcus Fugger, blindstamped double fillet panels with gilt fleurons at corners, Fugger supralibros (hand holding floral spray surmounted by a bird) in gilt at centre, single gilt quatrefoil in spine compartments, MS parchment spine label (light stains on front cover, neat repairs to spine). Provenance : Marcus Fugger (1529-97, binding, signature on front pastedown); Bibliothek Öttingen-Wallerstein (by descent, stamp lightly washed on title). An illustrated French Bible BOUND FOR MARCUS FUGGER, of the great Augsburg bibliophile and banking family. Although there is no documentary evidence of Fugger's visit to Paris, he had a number of bindings made there in the early 1550s. The woodcuts derive largely from earlier Bible editions and are, as Baudrier noted, reminiscent of Venetian-Florentine work of the 15th century, printed within more modern borders which originated with Rouillé and Payen. About 8 cuts derive from the 1546 Bible printed by Payen for Giunta, and Baudrier dated a further 16 cuts to about 1520-25, based on the style of costume depicted. Baudrier IX, 135.
