Basel: Johann Froben, 27 October 1495. 8vo (155 x 110 mm). 508 ff., 54 lines and headline, double column, Gothic type, initial spaces with guide-letter, highlighted in red ink, filigree decoration in red and black ink to the Summarium ; woodcut frontispiece illustrating St. Jerome writing to Paulinas, his epistola printed opposite. C&p. Early blind stamped pigskin in panels with central thistle motif; spine with remains of ms. title to uppermost of four compartments; red edges with remains of leather tabs to fore-edge and a few leaves. Condition: mild dampstaining to head, wormholes terminating at c6, occasional spotting, some leaves browned; clasps lacking, edges rubbed, wormholes to boards. Provenance: I. IA. Wicka (bookplate); Georgius (partly legible early inscription to endpaper); humanist inscription to endpaper; the gift of R.D. Jacobi to Joannis Moing, 1658 (cancelled inscription to t.p.); Joannis Baptistae Bourguin, 1678 (inscription to t.p.); scattered marginalia in at least two hands. a fine copy of one of the first bibles in octavo format , also known as the "Poor Man's Bible" since its convenient size made it more accessible. The publisher Johann Froben is most famous for his close association with humanist scholar Desiderius Erasmus Goff B-598; GW 4275; BMC III 791; HC 3118*.
