BIBLE, Latin: Biblia sacra . Paris: Antonius Vitré, 1662. 2° (408 x 265mm). Title in red and black, wood-engraved vignette on title, 2 double-page folding engraved plates by N. Sanson, coloured in outline, historiated initials. (A few leaves, mostly towards the end, lightly browned). 18th-century red French morocco, sides with wide gilt border incorporating drawer-handle tools, scrolls, fans, leaf sprays and flowers, spine in 7 compartments, one with green morocco lettering-piece, the others lavishly tooled in gilt with central floral device, surrounded by leaf-sprays, stars and lozenges, gilt edges (extremities very lightly rubbed, rear cover a little scuffed, small stain on front cover). Provenance : Joseph-Anne Louvart de Pontigny (1740-1818; lettered in gilt at foot of spine) -- ROBERT HOE (bookplate).

Louvart de Pontigny (known as "Candide") was avocat of the Breton Parlement and later an important counter-revolutionary, aligned with Puisaye. At one time a bounty of 100,000 francs was placed on his head.
