Thomas, Archdeacon of Montgomery (bookplate; his provenance notes and rebinding invoice laid-in) -- purchased from Maggs Bros., London, 17 November 1941 -- donated to SMS 1942. FIRST EDITION OF THE NEW TESTAMENT IN WELSH and any part of the Bible, except the Liturgical Epistles and Gospels of 1551. Translated by William Salesbury, except for a small portion by Richard Davies Bishop of St. David's, and Revelation by Thomas Huet. The translation was made from the Greek, apparently from the texts of Stephanus and Beza, with reference to the Latin Vulgate and to the Latin versions of Erasmus and Beza. "The work of these early Welsh translators was much hampered by the fact that the language spoken in North Wales differed considerably from that spoken in South Wales. Moreover the scantiness of printed Welsh literature compelled them to form vocabularies for their own use in translating. It was natural, therefore, that they should employ some words, and attach certain meanings to others, which did not meet with general approval" (Darlow and Moule). The missing leaves comprise: Title, Almanach and 7 pp. of Calendar (*1-8); English dedication and 6 pp. of the Address (a1-3); Citation from St. Chrysostom and List of Books (c4); Prologue (A1); 23 leaves of text (A8, B1, Xx1-8, Ccc1 and Ccc8, Ddd1-8, Eee1-3); Table of Epistles and Gospels, and Colophon (Eee4-5); blank leaf (Eee6).
