Beschreibung:

Title: Biblia, ad vetustissima exemplaria nunc recèns castigata... Author: ** Place: Venice Publisher: apud haeredes Nicolai Beuilaquae, & socios. Date: 1574 Description: [24], 1126, [2] pp. Signatures: [dagger]12 A-4A8 4B4 (-4B1 & -4B4, a blank). Illustrated with numerous woodcuts; elaborate woodcut border on title-page; woodcut initials. (4to) 20x14.5 cm. (8x5¾"), period full calf over boards tooled in blind, 1 (of 2) leather hinge, chain 100 cm. (39") long attached to rear cover. Well-illustrated 16th century Bible, with chain attached for its security. The practice of chaining Bibles to a desk or lectern in a church arose in the middle ages, to allow access to the holy scripture without the risk of theft. Some have wrongly interpreted this chaining as proof that the Church withheld the Bible from the laity. Lot Amendments Condition: A few small holes in the spine and other wear; small chip at top of title-page, remargined at bottom; lacking 4B1 (pp. 1121-2), last few leaves with chips in top corners; very good. Item number: 206308
