BINDING. - Missae in agenda defunctorum... ex missali romano. Bassano: Giovanni Antonio Remondino, 1740. 2° (324 x 236mm.). 24 pp. Printed in red and black, engraved title vignette, one full-page woodcut illustration of the crucifixion with initials G.P.F. (Final 12 pp. with old dampstaining).) Original yellow cartonage 'mourning binding', the covers printed in black with a wide ornamental woodcut border surrouding a large woodcut representation of Death as a skeleton leaning on a staff, worms appearing from various parts of its anatomy, 3 scorpions and 3 spare bones at its feet (backstrip very slightly split, slight discolouration to a section of lower cover). A VERY RARE SURVIVAL of a striking reminder of an age when a healthier more robust attitude towards death held sway.
