A CHARMING, EARLY REPRESENTATION OF CRICKET WITH A PHILADELPHIAN IMPRINT . London editions appeared in c. 1830 and c. 1835. The cover, carrying the full title, calls for 'twenty-eight neat copper-plate engravings'; this was the anticipated total for parts I and II together rather than part one on its own. The verso of the first leaf carries the drop-head title 'Sport for the Four Seasons', with the heading 'Spring' below; the scenes of 'Catch Ball' and 'Cricket' follow on the next page; the four following leaves, headed 'Summer', include a scene of 'Trap and Ball'. VERY RARE . Only 2 copies located (Brown University Library and New York Public Library). No 1828 issue of part 1 or 2 is listed in Shoemaker, Checklist of American imprints . cf. Rosenbach, Early American Children's Books 678; not in Osborne Early Children's Books or Padwick.
