BLACK CAT MYSTERY No. 39 Author: Place: Publisher: Date: Description: Harvey Publications. September, 1952. CGC certified: VG/Fine (5.0) Purple Label. "Slight (B-1)." White pages. Restoration includes: small amount of color touch on cover. Warren Kremer, Joe Certa and Rudy Palais art. Lee Elias cover. Hanging cover and panels. Used in Seduction of the Innocent. The Triumph of Dr. Payn "When you first meet Dr. Payn, he is in his laboratory wearing a white coat. On the couch before him lies a blonde young woman with conspicuous breasts, bare legs and the lower part of her skirt frazzled and in tatters, as if she had been roughly handled in strenuous but unsuccessful attempts to defend her honor. Next you see him lying in wait for another beautiful girl. He cuts off her shapely legs. You see her lying on the cobblestoned street without her legs while he rushes off on the sidewalk carrying them in his arms. Then you see him gloating over these lovely legs in his laboratory. The newspapers announce: BUTCHER-KILLER AT LARGE!" —Dr. Wertham, Seduction of the Innocent. The concluding chapter of Seduction of the Innocent is called "The Triumph of Dr. Payn," in which Wertham summarizes a disturbing tale of mutilation and sexual obsession entitled "The Body Maker." This is followed by a curious interlude in which Wertham describes seeing a young boy on the subway completely enraptured by a violent comic book. The sight causes Wertham to fall into a reverie, in which he fantasizes about giving a speech to "a huge audience of parents, doctors, legislators and officials." His fantasy speech rings with impassioned rhetoric: "Set the children free! Give them a chance! Let them develop according to what is best in them.... Don't teach them all the violence, the shrewdness, the hardness of your own life. Don't spoil the spontaneity of their dreams. Don't lead them halfway to delinquency and when they get there clap them into your reformatories.... Don't stimulate their minds with sex and perversity and label the children abnormal when they react." It's an rousing passage that humanizes the dry Dr. Wertham, who begins to sound less like a censorious crackpot pushing poor methodology and more like an ersatz Holden Caulfield, a misfit contrarian whose sole ambition was to save endangered kids from falling off the edge "of some crazy cliff" (or slippery slope) of comics. A limited edition of 100 softcover and 15 hardcover catalogues are available. Over 200 pages, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcovers $40, dust-jacketed hardcover with limitation plate $200. To order, contact ivan@pbagalleries.com or visit: https://www.pbagalleries.com/content/comics/. R. Crumb says, "I found [PBA's catalogue] so interesting that I am saving it for the texts that accompany the comics which were put up for auction. This is some of the best commentary I’ve yet seen on the quality of the content of comic books. I especially enjoyed the reviews of the post-war horror comics. Great. Priceless." Consignments welcome for PBA's Spring 2021 Comic Book sale. Pre-Code Horror, Golden Age and Silver Age comics, original art and ephemera sought. Send inquiries to ivan@pbagalleries.com.
