BLAEU, Willem and Joan. Novus Atlas, Das ist, Weld-beschreibung, Mit schönen newen außführlichen Land-Taffeln in Kupffer gestochen [Volume V. Scotland and Ireland]. Amsterdam: Joan Blaeu 1654.
BLAEU, Willem and Joan. Novus Atlas, Das ist, Weld-beschreibung, Mit schönen newen außführlichen Land-Taffeln in Kupffer gestochen [Volume V. Scotland and Ireland]. Amsterdam: Joan Blaeu 1654. Volume V only, 2° (515 x 342mm). German text. Engraved title with Scottish coat of arms and architectural marbled façade, hand-coloured and heightened in gold, 54 double-page and one single-page hand-coloured engraved maps, mounted on guards throughout, woodcut initials and tailpieces. (Browning and staining throughout, sometimes very heavy to both text and maps, map no. 4 with irregularly cut lower margin and short marginal tear, a number of maps with short marginal tears and a few small repairs to outer margins.) Original publisher's vellum panelled in gilt, green silk ties (sometime recased with later endpapers, covers soiled, very small patch of wear to fore-edge of upper cover). Provenance : Johann, King of Saxony (1801-1873, crowned monogram in margin of title) — Saxon State and University Library, Dresden (deaccession stamp). First German edition of Blaeu's atlas of Scotland and Ireland, comprising volume V of the Novus Atlas . The 'first printed county atlas' of Scotland (Koeman), Blaeu's atlas derives from the manuscript surveys carried out by Timothy Pont in Scotland between 1596 and 1600 and from Robert Gordon who was authorized by Charles I to amend and supplement the maps. Continuing the work of engraving the manuscripts begun by his father Willem, Joan Blaeu was granted privileges to publish the maps in 1654 by the States General, the States of Holland and West Friesland, Oliver Cromwell and Emperor Ferdinand III.
