BOCCACCIO, Giovanni (1313-1375) - Historia molto dilettevole. Venice: Giovanni Antonio e fratelli da Sabbio, 1526. A good copy difficult to find on the market of the work commonly called "Urbano" and usually attributed in the early editions to Boccaccio. It is a romance from the time of the Emperor Frederic Barbarossa, and was first printed in Bologna in 1492-93. Both, Gamba and the British Museum Catalogue, reject Boccaccio's authorship; interestingly Gamba found a manuscript of this work where Giovanni de' Buonsignori from Città di Castello is named as the author. He also thinks that style and certain expressions do not correspond to Boccaccio's style. 8vo (140 x 96mm). Title within woodcut border with printer's device repeated at end (small tear formerly repaired at E2 that touches some letters, light browning mainly in the margins). 18th-century calf, spine decorated in gilt with black inserts, gilt title on red morocco label, gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, speckled edges (light rubbing and restorations to joints). Provenance: armorial stamp on title - Saba bookseller (pencil note with the wording "Martini", Trieste 25 July 1940).
