Bodoni.- [Rossi (Giovanni Gherado de)] Scherzi Poetici e Pittorici, first edition, with original watercolour and goauche drawings for the pictorial engraved title and 40 plates bound in in place of the engravings, all with compositional under-drawing in pencil visible, one plate only (Amore vuol Vigilanza) possibly over an etched outline base but with no platemark, otherwise no signs of printed bases, each with original border of classical motifs including lamps, griffins, vases, vines, stalks of corn etc. finely executed in watercolour and gouache on uniform laid paper, some with armorial watermarks, tissue guards, occasional light foxing to text, a few ink spatters to plates (mostly margins or versos), bound in handsome red straight-grain morocco with elaborate gilt-tooled decorative border of figures with olive branches, sphinxes, heads, birds, flowers and other tools within ornamental rules, spine gilt in compartments with alternating motifs of harp and bow with quiver of arrows, Greek key gilt dentelles, green silk doublures and endpapers edged with gilt border, g.e., a little rubbed, a few scuffs, corners slightly worn, stain to upper cover at corner, [Brooks 600], 4to, Parma, Bodoni, 1795. ⁂ A superb and unique copy of one of Bodoni's most attractive productions. It combines a delightful collection of love poetry beautifully illustrated with scenes of Venus and Cupid with humans and allegorical figures, and bound in a suitably Neoclassical style. The work was issued with a pictorial title and 40 plates engraved by Francesco Rosaspina after José Teixeira Barreto within fine ornamental borders by Mercoli. Brooks refers to two issues in this size: one with the plates coloured "all'Etrusco" in black and yellow but without the borders, the other with the plates printed in sepia and with borders, of which 12 copies were drawn in very light ink for those who wished to decorate them in watercolour. The delicate Pompeian-style decorative borders in this unique copy differ from those in the engraved versions which are more similar in style to those on the binding.
