Publisher's original red cloth, by O. Kirkhner with his ticket, upper sides gilt with an all-over design centred with the medal of the order of St. George, spines gilt lettered and ruled in black, edges marbled, white moiré paper endpapers (corners lightly rubbed, a few spots on the upper cover of vol. 2). Provenance : N.M. Melik Shakh-Nazarov (pencilled title-inscription and press-mark). FIRST EDITION. AN EXCELLENT SET. A very important primary source for the history of the Caucasus, and a rare history of this celebrated infantry regiment. Published under the auspices of Grand Duke Georgii Mikhailovich, with a number of plates illustrating the uniforms and weapons. The regiment, singled out by Tolstoi in War and Peace (chapter XV), distinguished itself for bravery in a number of conflicts during the Seven Years' War, including the great victory at Kunersdorf, but particularly at the Battle of Zorndorf, which is described by some as the bloodiest of the century. A red gaiter was added to the uniform after the battle, marking the depth of blood in which the regiment's men fought. RARE: Zaionchkovskii lists vol. 3 only. Lyons 725; Zaionchkovskii 2063. (3)
