The work was presented to the subscribers of the Art-Union of Glasgow for the year 1863. J. Noel Paton (1821-1901), British painter, was known for his use of allegory. This series of five works combines straightforward image of the cruelties of the slave trade with classic religious symbolism. Paton's works are in the British National Gallery. The present work, being important in the realms of art, photography, and anti-slavery, is quite rare - OCLC lists only three copies, at Northwestern, the American Antiquarian Society, and Cornell University. Lot Amendments Condition: Some soiling and edge wear to wrappers; mounts well foxed, photographs only slightly so, some fading, good to very good. Item number: 265286
