BOOK OF HOURS, Latin , use of Rome. [France (vicinity of Lyons), c. 1470]. ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM, 164 leaves, [1-2 6 3-4 8 5 6 6-12 8 13 6 14-21 8 22 4]. 95 x 67 mm. (3 3/4 x 2 5/8 in.), written in brown ink in a small elegant lettre bâtarde , ruled in red ink, single columns of 16 lines, justification (50 x 36 mm.), 13 LARGE MINIATURES INFLUENCED BY THE ART OF SAVOY, 1 MINIATURE ADDED BY A SLIGHTLY LATER HAND, three historiated borders, all other pages with three-quarter illuminated borders of gold leaves on scrolling black ink stems interspersed with colored flowers and foliage, some with animals and putti or grotesques, numerous 1- and 2- line initials in burnished gold on red and blue grounds with white tracery, line fillers in red and blue with gold accents and white tracery, rubricated, catchwords visible on the last versos of several quires. Lacking text between fols. 108 and 109 and after fol. 161v. The ink at times very pale, some flaking of ink, below several miniatures three lines of text obscured by the darkening of the silver background, some flaking of pigment, some rubbing of miniatures and borders, some borders shaved, occasional spots and stains. Binding Modern brown morocco, concentric gilt-ruled rectangles on front, back and spine, edges stained yellow and sprinkled brown, red or brown heart shape painted on each edge of text block, half-morocco slipcase. Texts Calendar, with Lyons feasts, including St. Stephen bishop, Feb. 13, St. Mamertus, Aug. 17, St. Justus bishop, Sept. 2, Invention of St. Vincent, in red, Sept. 23, Revelation of St. Lazarus, Oct. 20, St. Victor, Oct. 21 (fols. 1 - 12v).
