BOOK OF HOURS, use of Rome, in Latin, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM , [southern France, possibly Auvergne, c.1470].
BOOK OF HOURS, use of Rome, in Latin, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM , [southern France, possibly Auvergne, c.1470]. 116 x 85mm. 157 leaves, apparently COMPLETE , although scribe stops inexplicably mid-sentence on final recto, ruled space: 61 x 40mm. SIX SMALL MINIATURES opening the Gospel extracts and prayers and SEVEN LARGE MINIATURES with full borders, illuminated initials throughout (water damage throughout, especially to calendar and miniatures on ff.29, 130 and 140, some repainting to f.63 and perhaps to f.69). 18th-century French olive sheep gilt. Doeskin pouch. PROVENANCE : (1) The feasts and saints in the calendar (Rotbertus Abbot; Florus, bishop of Lodève; Amandinus, bishop of Auvergne and Ferreolus of Vienne, patron saint of Marseilles) suggest a southern French production, most likely in the Auvergne. (2) 17th?-century inscription f.1: ‘d’Aire en Gascogne’. (3) ‘R. Douson’, 18th-century inscription in an English hand. (4) ALLAN HEYWOOD BRIGHT : bookplate. CONTENT : Calendar ff.1-12v; Gospel extracts ff.13-18v; Obsecro te and O Intemerata ff.19-28; prayers added in an early hand f.28v; Office of the Virgin, use of Rome, ff.29-89v; Office of the Dead, use of Rome ff.92-129v; Hours of the Cross ff.130-134; Hours of the Holy Spirit ff.134v-137v; Added prayers ff.137v-138; Seven Penitential Psalms and Litany ff.140-157. A charming pocket-sized Book of Hours produced in the south of France. The illumination is lively and engaging, and the sequence of miniatures depicting Death in the Office of the Dead and David in Prayer in the Seven Penitential Psalms are iconographically unusual. The subjects of the large miniatures are as follows: Annunciation f.29, Annunciation to the shepherds f.63, Flight into Egypt f.69, Death f.92, Death with mirror f.97, Crucifixion f.130, David in prayer f.140. The small miniatures are on ff.13, 14v, 16, 18, 19, 24.
