Missal.- Missale ad Usum Ecclesie Sarisburiensis, Tree of Jesse woodcut on title, Crucifixion on U4v, woodcut initials, two woodcut border-pieces on the colophon page, musical notation, printed in red and black throughout, Gothic type, double column, some leaves just shaved at head and foot, light browning, ownership note to front free endpaper, late 19th century maroon morocco by Francis Bedford (d. 1883) (see H M Nixon, Five Centuries of English Bookbinding, London, 1978, n. 91; Maurice Packer, Bookbinders of Victorian London, London 1991 p.15], boards and spine rules in gilt, a.e.g., [STC 16218; Weale-Bohatta 1450; Luborsky & Ingram. Engl. illustrated books, 1536-1603, 16218], 4to in eights, J Kyngston & H. Sutton, 1555. ***Includes chants for ordinary, Gloria, Prefaces (Christmas, Epiphany, Holy Week, Ascension, Pentecost, Holy Trinity, Apostles and Evangelist, Holy Cross, Feria, Holy Days), Canon (Pater Noster, Kyrie eleison). “The Prayer Book of Edward VI was abolished on the accession of Queen Mary in 1553, and at the restoration of Catholic worship, England returned to the old service books mainly of Sarum Use […]. Many of these Catholic liturgies were sought out and destroyed by the protestant on the accession of Queen Elizabeth so they are consequently now scarce” (Maggs 1964).
