Børge Mogensen (b. Aalborg 1914, d. Gentofte 1972) “The spoke-back sofa 50 years edition”. Free-standing two-seater aniversary sofa with cherry wood frame, pull-out side and back with spokes, loose cushions in seat and back upholstered with black leather. Model 1789. Designed 1945. Numbered 41/200. Manufactured and marked with brass plaque and label by Fritz Hansen 1995. L. 160 cm. Fritz Hansen celebrated the 50th aniversary of the iconic “Spokeback sofa” with a special and limited edition of 200 copies. Each sofa with individual number, this one numberered 41/200. The spoke-back sofa with sides that can be lowered by characteristic leather straps is one of Børge Mogensen most popular models. He designed it in 1945, when he and his peer Hans J. Wegner furnished a three-room flat for the autumn exhibition of the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Guild Exhibition. However, the sofa, a combination of classic two-seater sofa with English daybed and French chaise long, was too sophisticated for post-war taste and did not go into production until 1963 - this time with resounding success. Literature: Fredericia Furniture. Grete Jalk [ Red.], “40 Years of Danish Furniture Design”, vol. 2, p. 260–261.
