I and the Giuntine lily device on title of volume II (repeated in larger form at the end of each volume), portrait of Borghini on verso of title of volume II, 8 engraved plates on 7 sheets, 5 folding, with the blank Rr8 in volume I. (Somewhat browned and spotted.) 18th-century brown morocco, spines and sides panelled in gilt (slightly rubbed). FIRST EDITION of Borghini's Discorsi on the history of Florence prepared at the request of Cosimo de'Medici in connection with the painting of historical scenes in the Sala del Maggior Consiglio in the Palazzo Vecchio. Twenty years earlier Borghini had organised the festivities for the marriage of Francesco de'Medici to Joanna of Austria, an enterprise in which he had co-operated with Giorgio Vasari Mortimer Italian 83; Censimento B3266.
