BORN, Max. Vorlesungen über Atommechanik. Berlin: Springer, 1925. 8 o. Folding table, text illustrations. Original cloth (light dust soiling). FIRST EDITION. Born's treatise on the classical mechanics of multiple periodic systems, essential to the pre-1925 approach to the theory of atomic structure, appeared in print just at the time that quantum mechanics was discovered, and thus did not receive the recognition it deserves as "a uniquely lucid exposition of its subject" ( Biog. Mem. F. R. S. 17, p. 39). In his autobiography, Born wrote that "just before Heisenberg's discovery in 1925, I had published a book on the present situation in atomic theory I had had the audacity to add to the title: Volume I. In the Preface I explained this promise of a second volume by my confidence that the 'final theory' could be expected soon, 'in a few years.' This shows how certain I was that the decisive step was near, though it came even quicker than I had predicted, in fact the same year. This book is, I think, not only a final and satisfactory presentation of the older quantum theory, connected mainly with the names of Bohr and Sommerfeld, but has its intrinsic value as a condensed presentation of classical mechanics" ( My Life: Recollections of a Nobel Laureate , p. 230). BORN, Max and Pascual JORDAN. Elementare Quantenmechanik. Berlin: Springer, 1930. 8 o. Original printed wrappers. FIRST EDITION. Born and Jordan's textbook on the new quantum theory was published as Volume II to Born's Vorlesungen über Atommechanik (1925), which had been issued just prior to Heisenberg's discovery of matrix mechanics. The years following saw the publication of Born, Heisenberg and Jordan's famous "three-man" paper on quantum mechanics, as well as Schrödinger's development of wave mechanics and Dirac's intermediate methods. However, when writing their textbook, Born and Jordan limited themselves to matrix methods, since Jordan believed very strongly that the matrix approach was "the deeper and more fundamental one" (Born, My Life, p. 230); Born later came to regret this decision.. Dynamik der Kristallgitter. Leipzig and Berlin: Teubner, 1915. 8 o. Original cloth (spine faded). FIRST EDITION, with a printed slip "überreicht vom Verfasser" laid in. Probleme der Atomdynamik . Berlin: Springer, 1926. 8 o. Original cloth. FIRST EDITION. Problems of Atomic Dynamics. Cambridge: Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1926. Two series of lectures on the structure of the atom and the lattice theory of rigid bodies, delivered by Born at MIT during the winter of 1925-26. "My lectures . . . contained in the first part an outline of crystal structure dynamics, and in the second the elements of quantum mechanics [order reversed in the published version]. This was the first systematic presentation of this new field [emphasis ours]. When I began the lectures, the paper by Jordan and myself, in which matrix calculus was introduced, was still in press; the big three-man paper by Heisenberg, Jordan and myself appeared just at the end of the lecture course" (Born, My Life: Recollections of a Nobel Laureate , p. 225 FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. Optik. Ein Lehrbuch der Elektromagnetischen Lichttheorie. Berlin: Springer, 1933. Original cloth; dust jacket (defective). (6)
