BORROW, George Henry (1803-1881). [A collection of pamphlets in two volumes] London: printed for T.J. Wise, 1913-1914. 34 pamphlets bound in two volumes, small 4° (213 x 170mm). Three with frontispieces. Original wrappers bound in contemporary red half morocco, lettered in gilt on spine, top edge gilt. Provenance : CLEMENT SHORTER (1857-1926, bookplate from a design by Walter Crane . A FINE COLLECTION BELONGING TO BORROW'S BIOGRAPHER AND THE FOUNDER OF THE TATLER . EACH PAMPHLET IS LIMITED TO 30 COPIES. Shorter was persuaded by T.J. Wise to allow him to use his collection of Borrow manuscripts as the basis for this series of first edition pamphlets (24 of the 34 have a note of Shorter's copyright on the verso of the title). Shorter, journalist and author, published George Borrow and his circle in 1913, and edited a 16-volume edition of Borrow's Works , published in 1923. Wise, in answer to the demands of the bibliophile market for unpublished material by the great 19th-century writers, published 44 Borrow pamphlets, including eight in octavo.
