ca 1830-40. Black-jacked leather hat with black leather cockade and brass button with an eagle with outstretched wings carrying a heraldic crest in its breast presenting the letter A. The eagle is shown clutching an olive branch in its right talon and arrows in its left. Hatplate of die-cut gilt brass with stylized half-sunburst design. Top and bottom on hat present a brass band encircling the cap connected by brass rivets complete with a white wool pompom. Octagonal button on right side bordered in thin regimental grooves with eagle clutching a patriotic shield in its right hand and olive branch in left hand. Eagle is carrying a banner in its beak. Two red bands extend from top middle button to button on bottom right. The top band is of cotton-webbed construction and the lower band is formed by four singular strands forming one aggregate unit. Interior with black leather sweatband and owner's name D. Underhill penned in ink above and original hatmaker's paper label with image of a wound-up hose and hats reads Engine Hose Manufactory Michael Riley, Jr. Boston Overall height 13".
