Linden made extensive trips as a botanical explorer and horticulturalist to South and Central America. He pursued rigorous fieldwork on orchids, and he established the methods for their cultivation. Afterwards he worked as a plant dealer in Luxembourg from to and became director of the Jardin Royal de Zoologie et d'Horticulture in Brussels from to He continued his activities as a dealer, introducing new plants (particularly orchids) in Brussels and Ghent. His son Lucien Linden (1853-succeeded him as director of the company in The publication was begun in collaboration with his son Lucien and his colleague Émile Rodigas.
