Harrison Date: [1843] Description: Comprises: Treaty between Her Majesty and the United States of America. Signed at Washington, August 9, 1842. 8 pp. * Correspondence between Great Britain and the United States relative to the Treaty Lately Concluded at Washington; including Instructions from the Earl of Aberdeen to Lord Ashburton 1842-1843. 19 pp. * Papers relative to the Special Mission of Lord Ashburton to the United States of America in 1842. [2], 64 pp. * North American Boundary. Correspondence relating to the Boundary between the British Possessions in North America and the United States of America, under the Treaty of 1783. [In Continuation of Papers presented to Parliament in 1840.] iv, 167 pp. * Map to Illustrated the Boundary established by the Treaty of Washington of the 9th August, 1842 between Her Majesty's Colonies of New Brunswick and Canada, and the United States of America. 34½x40 cm. folding map with partial hand-coloring. Bound together with (folio) 12¾x7¼, modern half cloth and marbled boards, morocco lettering piece and bands on spine. An important collection of command documents relating to the Webster-Ashburton Treaty of Washington in 1842, principally to settling boundary disputes, especially the Maine-New Brunswick border skirmishes known as the Aroostook War, but also touching on the Great Lakes and the Oregon Territory, and on the affair of the Steamer Caroline which took place during the Rebellion of 1837. Possibly extracted from a larger set of State Papers, with two preliminary leaves also bound in, but these documents have separate pagination. An early hand has neatly provided continuous pagination. This copy has a note on the verso of one of the preliminaries: "This Book is to be preserved in the office of Her Majesty's Principal Secy. of State Home Department 1843." Lot Amendments Condition: Preliminaries with a tiny bit of adhesion; short marginal stub tear to map; overall fine. Item number: 150499
