BOYDELL, John and Josiah, and John William EDY (ca.1780-1820). Boydell's Picturesque Scenery of Norway; with the principle Towns from the Naze, by the route of Christiania, to the magnificent Pass of the Swinesund ... with remarks and observations ... by William Tooke . London: by Hurst, Robinson and Co., 1820. 2° (417 x 265mm). 80 HAND-COLOURED AQUATINT PLATES. (Lacks half-title, some spotting in text leaves, occasionally heavy, some offsetting.) 19th-century dark red straight-grained morocco, panelled in gilt, gilt spine, gilt edges (detached at front hinge, very lightly scuffed at extremities). Provenance : Jane Barbor (booklabel). Single volume edition of the most important English colour plate book on Norway (Tooley). Edy went to Norway in the summer of 1800 with William Fearnside travelling from Oslo to Trondheim, Morebjene and Bergen, recording the scenery in words and picture as they went. Picturesque Norway was first published in 8 parts from 1811-1820 and in 2-volume book form. The present copy of the single-volume edition has a title watermarked 1824 (as the Abbey copy).
