Studies of Figures Original and Selected, an album of original drawings and watercolours, together c.37 studies of varying sizes on 20 sheets (each 190 x 283mm.), some relating to Holme School, Hampshire, includes 'Bird Boys The Faithless Sentinel', watercolour over pencil, c.155 x 205mm., initialled and dated in pencil, 1850; 'At Holme School', watercolour over pencil, c.160 x 228mm., dated in ink 'Decr 29th: 1850'; 'From life. Holme School. ?Hunt', watercolour over pencil, c.145 x 105mm., titled and dated in ink, 1850; and 'Blowing a Cloud', pen and black ink, c.165 x 215mm., scene of three gentlemen smoking in a drawing room, captioned in ink 'From Life. "Blowing a Cloud". These figures are not drawn to a relative scale', n.d., [1850], some offsetting, occasional spotting, contemporary calf-backed decorative limp boards, stained, small oblong 4to, 1850. ⁂ Edward Bradley (1827-1889), English clergyman and novelist, best known for his tale of an Oxford undergraduate The Adventures of Mr. Verdant Green, written under the pseudonym of Cuthbert Bede The illustrations for this and his subsequent works were done by himself. The present album comes with a presentation note 'With kind Xmas wishes for all at Edgar House. Xmas Eve 1891', with a ms. list of 'Cuthbert Bede's works' recto. Also included are two of Bradley's engraved armorial bookplates.
