Title with large engraved portrait of the author, 22 large illustrations (5 engravings, 17 woodcuts) of astronomical instruments, large engraved view of the observatory at Hven, 5 woodcuts of Hven, 3 woodcut text diagrams, ornamental initials, head- and tailpieces. (I2 trimmed at head, some pale spotting and marginal dampstaining.) Modern blue half morocco (lightly rubbed). Provenance : "Marg. Flimynge" (early inscription on title). Second edition, first trade edition, of one of Brahe's most important works. With the exception of the portrait and the engraving on C6v, replacing a woodcut, the illustrations are printed from the same plates and blocks of the 1598 edition, which were sold by the author's heirs to Levinus Hulsius; the engraving of the observatory has been altered to incorporate a lettered identification, which had been printed letterpress in the first edition. Brahe is also credited as a Shakespeare source for Hamlet : the names "Rosenkrans" and "Guldestere" appear in the list surrounding Brahe's portrait on the title. Houzeau & Lancaster 2703; Norman 320.
