Beschreibung:

BRAHMS, Johannes (1833-1897). String Quintet no.1, op.88 , proof copy. [Berlin: N. Simrock, November 1882]. 8° (272 x 168mm). Engraved throughout. Contemporary wrappers (split along spine, with some tears and rubbing). EXTENSIVELY CORRECTED IN AUTOGRAPH BY BRAHMS, with further corrections by the Simrock Hauslektor , Richard Keller. Upper cover heavily annotated, including the note 'II Corr[ektur] 13/11 [18]82 R. K[eller]', further endorsement dated 20 November 1882, lower cover annotated with an autograph note signed (with initial 'B') by Brahms, in blue pencil, 'Ich wollte es mir ... holen mit Gruß' (rubbed and hardly legible). The proof includes annotations in lead pencil by Brahms in 15 places, ten of the annotations including musical notes or phrases as emendations; his changes also show close attention to phrasing, dynamics (including the addition of a 2-bar crescendo at b.159 of the allegro energico ) and tempo (a simple rit. at the conclusion of the first movement being amended to 'rit. sempre'). His proof-reading has been followed by that of Keller, in blue pencil, often clarifying Brahms's annotations, but in a number of cases adding or refining further details; in b.67 of the allegro energico where Brahms emends a ff pizzicato to 'p marc[ato]'; Keller cancels the 'marc.'. Brahms's Quintet no.1 was written in Ischl in May 1882 and first performed in December of that year. The publication of the work by Simrock has been known to have occurred in November/December -- a date-span to which the present proofs lend further precision (Margit McCorkle. Johannes Brahms: Thematisch-bibliographisches Werkverzeichnis . Munich 1984 p.363 ff). Op.88 was in fact the second string quintet composed by Brahms, the first being the abandoned first version, for string quintet, of the Piano Quintet, in F minor op.34. Brahms followed Mozart in using two violas rather than Schubert with two cellos. The work succeded the Second Piano Concerto (1881) and preceded the Third Symphony (1883) in a period when Brahms was at the height of his powers.
