Single and double column. Typographical ornaments. 119 woodcut illustrations printed from 107 blocks (Hodnett 1824-81, 1883-99, 1901-31), woodcut initials. (Minor worming at the beginning, light staining towards the end.) Binding : contemporary English blind-tooled calf over wooden boards, sides panelled with intersecting fillets, an outer crest roll and an inner roll-tooled border of floral design (rebacked, endpapers replaced). Provenance : Thomas and Isabelle Hervey, presumably Sir Thomas Hervey, MP for Bury St. Edmunds and father of the first Earl of Bristol (b. 1665): inscription on title -- Henry Christopher Metcalfe, Hawstead House, Bury St. Edmunds: inscription on pastedown (bequeathed by him to) -- William Morris Kelmscott House, Hammersmith: bookplate -- Robert George Windsor-Clive, Earl of Plymouth: armorial bookplate. Second English edition. All but one of the woodblocks were first used in Richard Pynson's first edition of 1509. The illustrations by Pynson's artist were not copied from the Basel cuts by Dürer and others, but from the 1497 Paris edition (GW 5058). If the Pynson edition is a notorious rarity, copies of Cawood's edition now also rarely appear on the market, especially in early bindings. FINE CONDITION. STC 3546; Pforzheimer 41.
