(A few small spots, headlines shaved, a few underlinings.) 19th-century citron straight-grained morocco, spine lettered in gilt (very lightly scuffed at extremities). Gonse (20th-century booklabel). FIRST ENLARGED EDITION of a highly influential satire cataloguing the follies of human weakness and vice. It went through 26 editions by the end of the 15th century in German, Latin, Dutch and French, and continued to be printed well into the 16th century. Erasmus is one of many who adopted Brant's form for his own satire, Moriae encomium . In the present edition the reference to the discovery of America appears on f. 76v. The fine woodcut illustrations -- also highly influential -- are those created for the first edition of 1494, with a few additions to the series from earlier Bergmann editions.
