Black letter, roman and italic type. 118 woodcut illustrations printed from 107 blocks [Hodnett 1824-81, 1883-99, 1901-31], woodcut initials and type ornaments. (Light soiling and small pen trials on the title, small and faint marginal dampstain in a few leaves.) 19th-century russia by Clarke & Bedford, sides panelled in gilt, spine gilt in compartments, gilt turn-ins and edges (some discolouration and staining to spine panel and edges, joints rubbed). Provenance : collation note in ink on the front endpaper -- Major-General Frederick Edward Sotheby (d.1909; Ecton Hall armorial bookplate). Second English edition of this highly influential satire cataloguing the follies of human weakness and vice. The 1509 first English edition is very rare: ABPC and AE last record one at auction in 1979, which lacked 40 leaves. The memorable series of woodblocks were first used in Richard Pynson's edition of 1509 and are, in nearly all cases, 'very well preserved.' All but seven were copied from Pierre Rivière's 1497 French edition, which in turn were derived from the cuts by Dürer and others which appeared in the Basel 1494 first edition. The 'other workes' included in translation by Barclay are Dominicus Mancinus The Mirrour of Good Maners and Aeneas Sylvius Piccolomini Certayne Egloges . In Jackson's view, the inclusion of the latter adds 'considerable interest and value' to Cawood's edition. A TALL AND CRISP COPY .
