English verse text in black letter, Latin in roman. 118 woodcut illustrations printed from 107 blocks [Hodnett 1824-81, 1883-99, 1901-31], woodcut initials and type ornaments. (Title soiled, some soiling and damp-staining to text margins, upper corner of T1 torn away with loss to shoulder notes, final leaf creased, soiled and with repaired tear to upper corner touching on text, other occasional marginal tears.) Late 18th-century polished calf, spine gilt-panelled and with two maroon morocco labels, gilt arms of the third duke of Roxburghe stamped on sides, speckled edges (rubbed, joints a little cracked, scratch mark to covers). Provenance : John Ker, 3rd Duke of Roxburghe (1740-1804; arms on binding; his sale, Robert H. Evans, 18 May 1812 and 41 following days, lot 3294, £9-19-6 to Harding). THE ROXBURGHE COPY OF THE SECOND ENGLISH EDITION. The first English edition of Brant's Narrenschiff had appeared in 1509 under Richard Pynson's imprint. Remarkably, the second edition published 61 years later used the same series of woodblocks which were, with few exceptions, 'very well preserved.' All but seven were copied from Pierre Rivière's 1497 French edition, which in turn derived from the cuts by Dürer and others in the original Basel 1494 edition in German. The 'divers other workes' included in the present edition are 'The Mirrour of good Maners' translated by Alexander Barclay from Dominicus Mancinus, and 'Certayne Egloges,' translated by Barclay from Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini. According to Pforzheimer, the inclusion of the latter makes this edition 'of considerable interest and value'. A TALL COPY.
