BRIGADOON LOEWE, Frederick and LERNER, Alan Jay. "BRIGADOON. " Opened in New York, 13 March 1947. Produced by Cheryl Crawford. Cinema version released 1954. "BRIGADOON, BRIGADOON, THERE MY HEART FOREVER LIES" Frederick Loewe's personal archive of manuscript music generated during the creation of this award-winning and extremely popular musical, the team's first great success, in which Loewe successfully evoked the Scottish Highlands in music without paroding its music or using a bagpipe. Lerner later stated that the the original story line was loosely inspired by his reading of the works of James M. Barrie, especially A Window in Thrums and Auld Licht Idylls, whose atmospheric depiction of old Scotland had made a strong impression on the young writer. The show, interestingy, was turned down by many Broadway producers before they offered it to Cheryl Crawford. It received almost unanimously glowing reviews upon its opening, won the Critic's Circle Award for the best musical of 1947, and ran for 581 performances. This present group of manuscripts, sparse though it is, comprises THE ONLY SURVIVING GROUP OF MANUSCRIPTS FROM BRIGADOON, MOST IN LOEWE'S HAND. Brigadoon is without question a key work of the fruitful Lerner-Loewe collaboration. When it opened, at the Ziegfeld in 1947, Brooks Atkinson reviewed it enthusiastically: "To the growing list of major achivements on the musical stage, add one more - Brigadoon." The show starred Marion Bell (later married to Alan Lerner) and featured spirited and colorful choreography by Agnes de Mille. It was the winner of the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical and won a Tony for de Mille's choreography. The movie version, starring Grace Kelly, has proven an unduring favorite. Loewe's archive contains a number of probably very early melodic sketches, some for well-known numbers, and two more fully realized scores; all but these latter are in the composer's autograph.
