BROADSIDE]. To the Inhabitants of Pennsylvania. A Very dangerous Attempt to render ineffectual your virtuous Exertions, against the Inroads of Oppresson and Slavery, being now meditated by the East-India Company, under the Direction of a corrupt and designing Ministry; you are most earnestly requested to meet at the State-House, on Saturday next at Two o'Clock in the Afternoon; to consider what Measures will be necessary to prevent the Landing of a large Quantity of Tea, which is hourly expected; and which, if allowed a footing in this Land of Liberty, will speedily and efectually change your present invaluable Title of American Freemen to that of Slaves. Wednesday, October 13, 1773. n.p., n.d. [Philadelphia 1773]. Oblong 12mo, 100 x 204mm. (4 x 8 in.), evenly browned. Not in Evans; Shipton & Mooney 42522 (one copy, PHi). "AMERICAN FREEMEN," OR SLAVES? An extremely rare small broadside, probably intended to be posted on walls, announcing a public meeting to oppose the landing in Philadelphia of a shipment of East India Co. tea. By the Tea Act of May 1773, Parliament had authorized the corrupt and mismanaged East India Co. to send half a million pounds of tea to America with special exemptions from the usual tax; by this arrangement, the tea would be significantly lower in price than other imported tea. Merchant consignees were specified in New York, Charleston, Boston and Philadelphia. The mass meeting called for in the present broadside was held on October 16, and a Committee was selected which represented the public in discussions with the Philadelphia consignees, who chose to resign, rather than risk the patriot's ire. The consignees of the other designated cities dis likewise, except in Boston, where Sam Adams and others organized the demonstration known as the Boston Tea Party, which took place on 16 December.
