Moyes for the author, [1827]-1828-1829. 2 volumes, 4 o (321 x 339 mm). Titles, dedication, lists of plates, 96 engraved plates on India paper by E. Finden, J.T. Willmore, S. Rawle and others after the author, one general map and 12 sectional maps by A. and I. Arrowsmith after the author. (Some spotting, mainly affecting text, but occasionally plates.) Contemporary green morocco gilt, gilt edges. Provenance : Edward Francis Hutton (bookplate). FIRST EDITION, LARGE-PAPER ISSUE, with some plates stamp, signed with Brockedon's initials. The work, was originally published in 12 parts in various sizes. Brockedon was an accomplished painter who exhibited at the London Royal Academy and was a member of the Academies at Rome and Florence, in addition to being a prolific author and inventor. His first expedition to the Alps was made in 1824, with the aim of investigating Hannibal's journey, and he returned in the summers of 1825-1829, crossing the Alps 58 times and passing in and out of Italy by over 40 different routes in the course of researching the present work. The book was dedicated to Brockedon's earliest patron, Archdeacon Froude, who had been responsible for the artist's initial training at the Royal Academy. Lowndes I p.279. (2)
