FIRST EDITION of Browne's refutation through observation and experimental investigation of popular misconceptions in the fields of history, folklore, science, philology, natural history, medicine and embryology. Browne's extravagant style was described by Johnson as "a tissue of many languages; a mixture of heterogeneous words, brought together from distant regions, with terms originally appropriated to one art, and drawn by violence into the service of another" ( Life of Browne ). The presumed second state of the title-page with publisher's name, Thomas Harper, in imprint abbreviated as above.
