BRUNFELS, Otto (c.1488-1534). Herbarium tomis tribus . Strassburg: Johann Schott, 1539; 1536 and 1536 (appendix dated 1539). 3 parts in one volume, 2° (318 x 204mm). Woodcut initials, 2 decorative woodcut borders and 242 woodcut illustrations mostly by Hans Weiditz (Some surface soiling on title-page and light marginal staining on the first and last leaves.) Contemporary German calf over wooden boards, title in elaborate blind-tooled borders on the upper cover, spine with four raised bands and blind tooled in compartments (lacking clasps, some neat repairs at edges and corners, modern front endpapers). Provenance : cancelled contemporary manuscript notes on title-page -- Bibliotheki Michata Edwarda Mohra (manuscript note on title-page). An interesting scholarly copy of this major Herbal, annotated by several contemporary and near contemporary hands on the final endpapers, with notes on the plants, together with recipes and remedies, as well as on most of the woodcuts with the translation of the names of each plant into late 16th-century Polish. As Hunt has pointed out, the publishing history of the three parts of Brunfels's work in their various editions remains to be clarified. The present copy consists of the fourth edition of vol. I, the second edition of vol. II and the first edition of vol. III, with the appendix dated 1539. Hence most authorities agree that the proper date assigned to the collected edition is 1539. Adams B-2925; Hunt 30; Nissen BBI 257 IC, IIB, III; Stafleu and Cowan 852-854.
