BRY, Theodor de and Johann Theodor de BRY Nova alphabati effictio . Frankfurt: de Bry, 1595.
BRY, Theodor de and Johann Theodor de BRY Nova alphabati effictio . Frankfurt: de Bry, 1595. 2 o (301 x 202 mm). Text in Latin and German on verso of plates, except for "Z" which is printed as a bifolium. Engraved title within architectural and historiated border and 24 full-page engraved letters by Johann Theodor de Bry (Some occasional pale browning.) Original silver-stamped vellum, gilt and gauffered edges. Provenance : acquired from Ars Libri, 1985. FIRST EDITION. "De Bry shows quite literally how the letter functions as humanity's chief means of support in a fallen world. The Nova Alphabati Effictio ( Newly Fashioned Alphabet ) consists of twenty-four letters designed by de Bry and engraved by his son Johann Theodor de Bry In the initial engraving, the first letter of the alphabet is linked directly to the Fall. Adam and Eve have, so to speak, fallen on the extended arms of the letter itself, which is intertwined with the branches of the Tree of Knowledge and the snaky limbs of Satan, who assumes the form of a female serpent resting on top of the A . According to the accompanying verses, Adam tasted from the forbidden tree and as a result 'the letter now guides the divine soul Tasting of the tree, Adam and Eve taste the letter as well, as they fall into an alphabetical order that is the mark both of their disobedience and of the possibility of recovering, through memory, their prelapsarian condition De Bry's engraving suggests that from this point on--beginning with the Fall--the work of recovering origins (which is the work of the ethnologist after all) will be mediated by, indeed will have to rest upon, the supportive structure of the alphabet, for nothing in the fallen world is outside the letter" (Michael Gaudio, Engraving the Savage: the New World and Techniques of Civilization , Minneapolis, 2008, pp. 13-16). The letters that follow incorporate Biblical figures and references, including Cain, David, Judith, Luke, Moses, Noah, Peter, Salomon, Thomas, and Christ (Xchristus), creating an alphabetical procession of Biblical history from Genesis into the era after Christ. RARE. BM/STC German 161; Berlin Kat. 5281; Guilmard 368.38a; Hollstein 171-195; Janet S. Byrne, Renaissance Ornament Prints and Drawings , New York: Metropolitan Museum, 1982, no. 58; Thieme-Becker V:162.
