Van der Gucht after T.Thornhill, portrait of the author by G.Vertue, nine double-page charts by H.Moll (occasional light spotting), contemporary panelled calf (worn). Provenance: Admiral George Byng, Viscount Torrington (1663-1733, inscription and Torrington armorial bookplate); William Arthur Cavendish-Bentinck, sixth Duke of Portland (bookplate, small gilt coronetted 'P' on covers). Burchett (1666-1746) served as first secretary to the Admiralty from 1698 to 1742, but started his career as Pepys' body servant and clerk in about 1680. His intimate knowledge of the events described in the latter part of the book make it particularly valuable.
