Original boards. Custom chemise and slipcase, leather spine label. L3 with closed 3" tear and loss to corner, light offsetting to maps, first map with stub tear and crease and a 4 1/2" closed fold tear, joints cracked and backstrip chipped. FIRST EDITION, IN ORIGINAL BOARDS. Very attractive copy, a defense of Burgoyne's conduct during the 1777 campaign and his defeat at Saratoga on October 7, 1777. The plan overlays depict the progress of the battles. Burgoyne's surrender to General Horatio Gates was a critical event in the progress of the American Revolution. Here Burgoyne persuasively shifts the blame to General Howe, for his lack of support, and to his ill-judging superior, Lord George Germain. Burgoyne was paroled to England in May, 1778 to answer the charges against him in Parliament. Burgoyne requested and was denied an audience with the King and soon came to join Charles James Fox in supporting the cause of American independence.
