This cousin was John Francis, 12th Lord Arundell of Wardour who succeeded his father in 1862 and with whom the Burtons stayed on a number of visits to London, and who Isabel would have seen at the time of the publisher's dinner party for her book in 1879. The work is mostly of their visit to India in 1876, Isabel's experiences in Goa, and long political dialogues, especially on the 'partition of Turkey' purporting to be her views but are in fact those of Richard and written by him. Lady Burton's first published book, a record of their Damascus posting 1869-71 and of their desert travels with Drake during which Isabel 'gleaned only women's lore.' A preponderance of tribute to her husband's courage and exploits fills the pages, but the work was a best-seller and even solicited praise from Swinburne. Much of the material on harem life came not from her experiences but were related to her by Jane Digby, a close friend, and were abridged for delicacy's sake. Enclosed is a large, undated carte de visite photograph of Isabel sporting a Turkish fez. (3)
