BURTON, Richard Francis and Charles F. Tyrwhitt DRAKE. Unexplored Syria. Visits to the Libanus, the Tulûl El Safã, the Anti-Libanus, the Northern Libanus, and the 'Alãh . London: Tinsley Brothers, 1872. 2 volumes, 8° (229 x 150mm). Folding map and 27 plates, 11 folding . Original yellow cloth lettered in black on spines and covers, upper and lower covers double-ruled in black. Provenance : Lady Georgiana Stisted. (inscription by Isabel Burton) FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR TO HIS SISTER, IN VERY FINE CONDITION, inscribed on half-titles by Isabel Burton for her husband in his absence 'To Lady Stisted with the affectn. love of her brother Richard F. Burton July 1 - 1872.' With the inscription on front endpaper verso: '2 Vols. Coll. & perf. F.C.B. 9 July, 1872.' When Burton returned from Damascus he made two visits to Edinburgh in January and May, 1872 to visit his sister Lady Maria Stisted and his nieces Georgiana and 'Minnie'. In early June he sailed for Iceland. This inscription would have been made by Isabel at his request while he was off on another trip and it was she, in fact, who 'cobbled together' and corrected the proofs for this book in the weeks after her husband had sailed. Perhaps because of the bitter relationship that existed between Isabel and Maria, it is inscribed by Isabel from Richard alone. Penzer p. 85-88. Casada 68. (2)
