BURTON, Richard Francis First Footsteps in East Africa; or, An Exploration of Harar . London: Longman, Brown, 1856. 8° (233 x 150mm). Two maps and 4 coloured lithographic plates, with half-title, advertisements on paste-downs, publisher's 24pp. catalogue for March, 1856. (Without Appendix IV, light spotting on half-title and frontispiece verso). Original blind-stamped brick-red cloth gilt, edges uncut, (a little rubbed or soiled). FIRST EDITION, SECOND ISSUE. Conforming with Penzer's second issue of what was an immediately popular book. With an unrecorded preliminary leaf to Appendix IV. Recorded copies contain a single Preface leaf (*PP 8) reading 'Appendix IV.' This copy is with an additional leaf preceding *PP8: 'Appendix IV. A brief description of certain peculiar customs noticed in Nubia, by Werne, and other travellers in Eastern Africa, under the name of "fibulation."' It was Ferdinand Werne who lived to first report this practice in his book published 1852, and on which Burton lectured to the R.A.I. Penzer p. 60-63. Casada 35. Spink 16.
