BURTON, Richard Francis First Footsteps in East Africa; or An Exploration of Harar . London: Longman, Brown, 1856. 8° (227 x 148 mm). Two maps and 4 colour lithograph plates, with half-title, publisher's 24-page catalogue for March, 1856. (Without Appendix IV). Modern red full morocco gilt, (one gathering loose). FIRST EDITION, SECOND ISSUE (?). The distinctions between the first and second issues of the first edition noted by Penzer are the cloth colour and 4mm difference in paper size. This copy falls short of the first issue paper size but its original cloth binding is unknown. Penzer p. 60-63. Casada 35. Spink 16. [Richard Francis BURTON]-Laurence OLIPHANT. African Travellers . New York: Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine, 1856. 8° (218 x 132mm). Modern blue wrappers. Review of 'First Footsteps...' extracted from Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine. Vol. LXXX. July-December, 1856, American Edition - Volume XLIII, p. [ii], 489-502. Casada notes that Oliphant subsequently became close friends with Speke and, indeed 'he may have played no small part in the ultimate breach between Speke and Burton.' Oliphant was an odd mix, born into a family of fervent evangelicals, famous in law, sophisticated and widely travelled, secretary to Lord Elgin in China and Japan, and in the 1870s caught up in a fanatic religious sect. Casada 35. Not in Penzer. (2)
