Taking its initials from designers Catelli and Fiorani, CF was founded in Piacenza, Italy in 1928. The firm built high-performance 175cc and 248cc models, which enjoyed considerable success in racing, until it was taken over by Fusi, the Italian FN importer, in 1937. In 1967 an ex-Benelli executive, Sr Campagna, revived the brand and began producing two-stroke lightweights powered by Minarelli engines. Following Campagna’s death the firm was sold and closed down for good in 1971. The restored racing model offered here previously formed part of an Italian private collection and is described as in generally good condition. Boasting near ‘square’ bore/stroke dimensions of 60x61.5mm, this handsome machine is powered by CF’s own ‘face cam’ engine; a variation of the traditional overhead-camshaft layout in which the valves are opened via rockers by the lobes of a shaft-driven horizontal plate (a design forever associated with Chater-Lea). Other noteworthy features include a Bosch magneto, Dell’Orto carburettor and an Albion three-speed foot change gearbox. We are advised that the engine revs freely and runs well, and that the motorcycle performed well on a recent test ride.
