Ducati’s first foray into two-wheeled transportation was the Cucciolo (‘little pup’) engine of 1945, which was designed for attachment to a bicycle. Unusual in being a four-stroke at a time when most such utility units were two-strokes, the Cucciolo and its derivatives were used for a number of lightweight motorcycles well into the 1950s. For the succeeding decade though, Ducati turned to two-stroke power for its smallest models, arguably the most stylish of which was the 48 Sport. Introduced in 1962, the latter was a proper ‘motorcycle in miniature’, boasting a duplex loop frame, 19” wheels and race-inspired styling. Marketed as the ‘Falcon’ in the USA, the 48 Sport found few customers outside Italy and the model lasted in production for only three years.
