DEBUSSY, CLAUDE Fine autograph musical quotation from "Pelléas et Mélisande", signed and inscribed ("Pelléas et Mélisande (1. Acte Scène III) pour Madame H. Fuchs, avec le meilleur hommage de ClaudeDebussy, Janv: 1916") comprising the opening four bars of scene III ("Devant le château"), the short score notated in black ink on six staves, describing the entrance of Geneviève and Mélisande before the castle, with many indications of dynamics and phrasing ("morendo"), the oboe solo marked "m[ain] g[auche]" 1 page, oblong 8vo (c.17 x 26.5cm), on a printed album-leaf with an elaborate gilt border ("H. Lard__Paris"), verso blank, Paris, January 1916 This is a fine large quotation from Debussy's only completed opera and one of his greatest works. Autograph quotations from Pelléas et Mélisande are rare at auction--the last we have traced was in 2006. The recipient was the singer, translator and composer Henriette Fuchs (1836-1927). During the 1880s, Debussy had accompanied Henriette in concerts with the "Concordia" choir. Later, in 1903, the "Concordia" choir performed Debussy's cantata la damoiselle élue.
