Lot consists of (A) Colt Python with 6" vent rib barrel, serrated ramp front sight, and adjustable square notch rear sight. Front sight with yellow paint and rear with red for a contrasting sight picture and likely done by Mr. du Pont himself. Checkered hammer and serrated face trigger. Grips are ergonomic with a thumbrest on left side and 2 finger grooves, covered with self-adhesive cloth tape, smoothened, and softened by continuous use. CONDITION: Excellent, retaining virtually all of the Colt bluing with some marks from handling and use consistent with range use. Cylinder has a noticeable turn line, acquired through serious use. Mechanically fine, bore is excellent with crisp rifling. (B) Colt Government Model that has been extensively customized by John Giles. Sights replaced with a Giles rib, denoted by his particular method of affixation that used the front and rear sights as anchor points and utilizing a distinct adjustable rear sight and undercut front sight. Left side of slide with "GOVERNMENT / MODEL // COLT // AUTOMATIC / CALIBER .45 // (Rampant Colt). Right side of slide with "COLT'S MFG. CO. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.". Straps are stippled in Giles' distinctly aggressive style. Small parts comprise narrow checkered hammer, left side only safety, serrated slide release, long milled trigger that was hand checkered later, probably by Giles, serrated magazine release. Anatomic grips have a thumb rest on left side, palm swell on right side, and upswept area at the bottom, resulting in a very comfortable grip. CONDITION: Excellent, retaining the vast majority of the blue factory finish with some minor silvering commensurate with range use. Giles' stippling has softened somewhat from hand rubbing. Rails have been polished and fit between slide and frame is excellent. Ejector is loose. Mechanically fine, bore is excellent with crisp rifling. (C) Colt .38 Super, also distinctly customized by Giles with undercut front sight and Giles' distinct adjustable rear sight. Small parts comprise a serrated slide release and safety, checkered hammer, long 1911A1 grip safety, arched serrated mainspring housing, serrated short trigger, and serrated magazine release. Correct Colt Super .38 Automatic legends. Front strap is checkered in Giles' distinct style, and grips are the same anatomically comfortable style as the .45 ACP. CONDITION: Excellent, retaining the vast majority of the Colt blue finish, with some minor marks from handling and range use. Mechanically fine, bore is excellent with crisp rifling. (D) Hi Standard Model S-101 Supermatic with smooth blade front sight on a serrated ramp, fully adjustable rear sight. Barrel with 2 large port compensator slots flanking front sight island, weight mounted under muzzle end of barrel. Marked with correct Hi-Standard legends. 2 piece grips with ergonomic thumb rest. CONDITION: Very good with some minor marks that are commensurate with consistent range use, still retaining virtually all of the factory blue. Mechanically fine, bore is excellent with crisp rifling. Compensator has some carbon build up from years of use. All four guns are housed in a bullseye shooter case with plaque on top reading "WILLIAM K. DU PONT / DELAWARE STATE POLICE / PISTOL CLUB". Hinged side cover with affixed Bausch and Lomb spotting scope for checking shots without leaving the line, and stapled pieces of stretchable cloth for holding magazines, along with instructions for adjusting his sights: "Colt .38 spl. clockwise - left & down / Hi Standard .22 clockwise - left & up / Giles guns marked". Removable top shelf has pistol rack for storing pistols, Mr. du Pont's shooting classes, and a candle that would have been used to smoke the sights and increase the contrast between sights and target. Additionally, there are staples, whistle, cleaning pads, bracket, multitool, and additional magazines. Magazines are electropencilled with a number, a common practice across the shooting disciplines.
